The Johor Student Leaders Council had successfully collaborated with the Institute of the Diplomatic and International Relations (IDFR) for the Young Diplomat Programme. This is the second collaboration between JPNJ-IDFR and the first collaboration between IDFR with secondary school students as IDFR is usually the center for training diplomats and diplomatic officers from Malaysia and beyond. As the JSLC coach, I strongly believe that leadership skills should be developed from schools and not when they start their studies at the tertiary levels. Being change agents, youth need to be given early exposure and we hope the training will prepare the students to be an exemplary leader with stellar qualities and readiness to serve the nation. Indeed, it was a privilege and great opportunity for the student leaders to hone their leadership skills as well as enhance their communication skills, ethics and etiquette as well as cultivate their knowledge and interests in local and international current affairs. We were interviewed by Berita Harian and hopefully, this will give better insight on the pivotal role of student leaders in steering the helm of future leadership in Malaysia and beyond.

I was glad to be invited by the Fully Residential & High Performance Schools Division, Ministry of Education Malaysia to facilitate the 21st Century Learning workshop series. I facilitated sessions on Social Media in Teaching and Learning where 50 teachers from all over Malaysia took part to learn more on how to integrate social media in engaging the students effectively. For the first phase of the workshop series, we explored social media and web tools such as Padlet, Glogster, YouTube and PowToon where participants designed their lesson plans, developed teaching materials and shared them online. The second day was dedicated on various ways Facebook and Twitter can be optimized for teaching and learning in schools. The teachers were brimming with enthusiasm and optimism where they were able to hone their teaching skills by integrating it with the help of social media. It’s high time we reassess how we teach by evaluating the ways Gen Y and Z perceive studying as well as their behavioural patterns, in order to facilitate effective learning.

I owe my success to my family, lecturers and friends who have been stellar supporter during my academic journey.

I’m currently helping my sensei, Associate Professor Naoki Ohshima to coordinate the Higher Education for the Next Generation workshop on Friday, 31 October 2014. This workshop is a collaboration between Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology and Meiji University, Japan. I was assigned to invite Malaysian academicians who would present the nascent trends on higher education in Malaysia.
