Sorry for the hiatus as I was swarmed with school duties, Johor student leaders management as well as pursuing my PhD, pheww!! However, I’ve developed few sets of SPM English Language Module since I started teaching in school. I used to be item developer for District and State Trial Exams before I did my Masters. Hence, I feel I might as well share the modules I’ve developed for my students with those who are interested. Enclosed is Set 1 of the SPM 1119 Module. I will provide the key answers and other modules as time progresses. Hope this helps!

I was glad that I had the opportunity to be part of 12th AsiaTEFL 2014 & 23rd MELTA International Conference 2014 held in Kuching, Sarawak. I have been attending MELTA conference on annual basis but I had to give it a miss last year due to my final examination. Boy, was I glad I decided to attend this year’s conference as there were amazing presenters and engaging topics of presentations that were lined up for all the conference participants. There was such a huge turnout for the conference ( I reckon there was more than 1500 presenters & participants!) at the Borneo Convention Centre. This year’s theme is Developing Sustainable Quality in English Language Education: Evolving Policies, Innovating Practices, Transforming Learning. Although H.R.H. Raja Zarith Sofiah binti Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah, the Royal Patron for MELTA was unable to officiate this year’s conference due to unforeseen circumstances, HRH Raja Nazhatul Shima Sultan Idris Shah graced the event with her eloquent speech on the significance of upholding English Language standard at global scale and pursuing ongoing professionalism in English Language teaching. YB Datuk Mary Yap, Deputy Minister of Education Malaysia shared the ongoing government initiatives to upgrade the standards of English in the nation.
I presented on the second day of the conference, sharing my project on Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) for Malaysian Schools : Stakeholder’s View. I was glad that it turned out well and it was great getting positive feedbacks and various views on the implementation of MALL in school from a pragmatic perspective. Although I’m an advocate of the use of e-learning and digital technologies in learning, I strongly believe that technology is still just a tool and can never replace a teacher’s role. However, a great teacher is someone who is able to utilize and optimize any resource and tool to engage the learners. With the dawn of 21st century learning, it’s either you sync or sink, teachers may not be the maestros of all the gadgets in the market but those who are able to use the right tools, learn, unlearn and relearn, adapt and adopt the right paradigm and pedagogical approach in teaching and learning. The perk of attending any conference is reuniting with old buddies and I’m so glad I met my ex coursemates, Dyan and Siaw Wee after 13 years! How time flies!
I had the chance to go on a river cruise along Sungai Sarawak and it was such a breathtaking experience. As this is my first trip to Kuching, I tried and tested some suggestions given by my friends (as well as googling for tips & info) on interesting highlights of this wonderful city. I tried Laksa Sarawak and it’s so delicious, even bought few packets of the Laksa Sarawak paste so I can cook it at home…hope I can recreate the recipe as well as the one I tasted here..simply nyaman! (delicious in local dialect)
For those interested, enclosed is my presentation that I’ve uploaded on my Slideshare.

21st century learning has given impetus to the exponential growth of mobile assisted language learning (MALL). It fosters engaging personalized learning where students can optimize their understanding and learning gratification on language learning via wireless mobile devices. It is inevitable to deny that majority of Malaysian students own a mobile phone. I even have students who own the latest (and of course way expensive) mobile phone than their teachers. Well, this raises an interesting question, how can mobile phone be useful for language learning? Hence, this indicates the importance of gauging MALL and its vast potential for the learners in multitude stages of educational realms. Although there are studies conducted on the research trends on MALL, not much studies have been conducted within the parameter of Malaysian schools. Although the current policy imposed by Malaysian Education System disallow the use of the mobile devices in schools, smart phone is professed to be “one of the key emerging technologies” that would elevate the status of Malaysian schools to smart schools holistically (UNESCO, 2010).

This week, I’ll be sharing my research at AsiaTEFL 2014 in Kuching. I’ll be presenting my research on Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) for Malaysian Schools. I’m presenting it from the stakeholders’ view where the analysis would be insightful to perceive the end users’ views on the implementation of MALL for Malaysian schools. Of course, there has been a mixed review on the implementation of MALL from teachers, students and parents. An interesting finding from a survey I conducted with 230 Malaysian respondents last year, 63% of the students use mobile phones, iPads and tablets to find resources for language learning homework & projects, learn new vocabulary, play games or even pick a new foreign language. Mobile learning can pique students’ interests to improve their language proficiency. However, a thorough revision is needed in the mobile learning policy as well as MALL management in classroom teaching.

As I watch the news on the upcoming arrival of the 20 Malaysian remains of MH17, I feel this solemn sadness heaving my heart. I decided to immortalize them in an elegy and here’s what I wrote, in dedication to all the fallen heroes of MH17.
THE HOMECOMING : AN ELEGY FOR MH17
By Nor Fadzleen Sa’don
We welcome you with sweet sorrow
As our anticipation is drawing near
Our sisters and brothers, the fallen heroes
The homecoming is finally here.
Verses of love grace you
Our teary souls embrace your demise
The nation awaits you
With open arms, with heavy hearts.
Your home awaits you
The family of strangers are here
As fragmented tomorrow transcends to sombre sky
We will soar as a nation, your spirits live in us.

This morning, I conducted a writing workshop at my former school, SMK Tasek Utara. Enclosed are some photos taken during the session as well as some snapshots of the materials I’ve shared with the students. It was great meeting familiar faces as well as sharing my knowledge with the lovely students. Wishing you the best in your upcoming SPM!
